What we found

Water was leaking at the corner where the ceiling meets the wall on the second floor due to a roof issue. Inside, the affected drywall became saturated and lost structural integrity, and the paint began to peel. In the photos, visible water streaking and paint/finish damage can be seen near the window area.

How the water got in

An exterior roof overhang extended from the roof. During rainfall, water flowed along the overhang onto the exterior wall, then toward the window area. From there, water entered through the window and migrated into the wall cavity. This condition occurred over a long period of time.

Note: mitigation and interior repairs hold best when the exterior source (roof/overhang drainage path and window assembly) is corrected.

Why we opened the wall

The drywall in the wall became saturated and lost structural integrity, and the insulation was wet. To remove damaged materials and expose the framing for proper drying, the affected section of wall was opened.

Mitigation & drying steps

  • Inspection: the affected area was inspected and the long-term intrusion pathway was documented.
  • Removal of damaged materials: damaged drywall was removed and wet insulation was taken out.
  • Structural drying: the wooden framing was thoroughly dried using professional drying equipment (air movers/dehumidification shown in photos).

Repairs & finish

Once the structure was completely dry, new dry insulation was installed, the wall was reassembled with drywall, and finishing and painting were completed to return the area to its original condition.
